What happened
during the last week of Christ’s life?
Some of the
events may surprise some readers.
Let’s look at
what the scriptures say.
Previously to
where we start our account, Jesus had been in Bethany,
and raised Lazarus from the dead. When this
happened some of the Jews reported
this miracle to the Pharisees. The Pharisees
had great concerns for the
nation and thought Jesus would turn the whole nation
towards Him, and so sought
to kill Him.
Joh
11:18 Now
Bethany was near Jerusalem,
about two miles away.
Joh
11:19 And
many of the Jews had joined
the women around Martha and Mary, to comfort them
concerning their brother.
Jesus performed
a
miracle and raised Lazarus from the dead.
Joh
11:43 Now
when He had said these things,
He cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus,
come
forth!"
Many of the
Jews
believed on Him, but some went to the
Pharisees. Here we see the start of
the conspiracy which led to the death of
Jesus.
Joh
11:45 Then
many of the Jews who had come
to Mary, and had seen the things Jesus did,
believed in Him.
Joh
11:46 But
some of them went away to the
Pharisees and told them the things Jesus did.
With this
latest
information regarding the miracles of Jesus, the
Pharisees and the chief priests
feared the whole nation would turn to Him and the
Romans would take over.
Joh
11:47 Then
the chief priests and the
Pharisees gathered a council and said, "What shall
we do? For this Man
works many signs.
Joh
11:48 If
we let Him alone like this, everyone
will believe in Him, and the Romans will come and
take away both our place and
nation."
Joh
11:49 And
one of them, Caiaphas, being
high priest that year, said to them, "You know
nothing at all,
From that
moment
on, they plotted to put Jesus to death.
Joh
11:50 nor
do you consider that it is
expedient for us that one man should die for the
people, and not that the whole
nation should perish."
Joh
11:51 Now
this he did not say on his own
authority;
but being high
priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would
die for the nation,
Joh
11:52 and
not for that nation only, but
also that He would gather together in one the
children of God who were
scattered abroad.
Joh
11:53 Then,
from that day on, they
plotted to put Him to death.
Because of the
evil plans to kill Him, Christ went into the
wilderness to a place called
Ephraim. This may well be around the area of
the Valley
of Achor.
Joh
11:54 Therefore
Jesus no longer walked
openly among the Jews, but went from there into
the country near the
wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there
remained with His disciples.
Six days
before Christ’s death. {Thursday]
Christ came to
Bethany.
Joh 12:1 Then,
six days before the Passover, Jesus
came to Bethany, where Lazarus was who had been
dead, whom He had raised from
the dead.
Joh
12:2 There
they made Him a supper; and
Martha served, but Lazarus was one of those who
sat at the table with Him.
Christ is
anointed by Mary.
Joh
12:3 Then
Mary took a pound of very
costly oil of spikenard, anointed the feet of
Jesus, and wiped His feet with
her hair. And the house was filled with the
fragrance of the oil.
Judas showed
his
true colours, he wasn’t concerned for the anointing
of Christ.
Joh
12:4 But
one of His disciples, Judas
Iscariot, Simon's son,
who
would betray Him, said,
Joh
12:5 "Why
was this fragrant oil not
sold for three hundred denarii and given to the
poor?"
Joh
12:6 This
he said, not that he cared for
the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the
money box; and he used to
take what was put in it.
Mary anointed
Christ for His burial {this anointing for burial was
done again by a woman at
the house of Simon the leper, 2 days before His
death.}
Joh
12:7 But
Jesus said, "Let
her alone; she has kept this for the day of My
burial.
Joh
12:8 For the
poor you have with you always, but Me you do not
have always."
Joh
12:9 Now
a great many of the Jews knew
that He was there; and they came, not for Jesus'
sake only, but that they might
also see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the
dead.
Joh
12:10 But
the chief priests plotted to
put Lazarus to death also,
Joh
12:11 because
on account of him many of
the Jews went away and believed in Jesus.
5 Days
before Christs Death
Joh
12:12 The
next day a great multitude
that had come to the feast, when they heard that
Jesus was coming to Jerusalem,
Joh
12:13 took
branches of palm trees and
went out to meet Him, and cried out: "Hosanna!
'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN
THE NAME OF THE LORD!' The King of Israel!"
Christ rides
the ass
from Bethphage.
Mat 21:1 Now when
they drew near Jerusalem,
and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives,
then Jesus sent two disciples,
Mat
21:2 saying
to them, "Go
into the village opposite you, and immediately
you
will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her.
Loose them and bring them
to Me.
A great amount
of
people waited for Christ to pass on the ass.
Mat
21:3 And if
anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The
Lord has need of them,' and
immediately he will send them."
Mat
21:4 All
this was done that it might be
fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying:
Mat
21:5 "TELL
THE DAUGHTER OF ZION,
'BEHOLD, YOUR KING
IS COMING TO YOU, LOWLY, AND SITTING ON A DONKEY,
A COLT, THE FOAL OF A
DONKEY.' "
Mat
21:6 So
the disciples went and did as
Jesus commanded them.
Mat
21:7 They
brought the donkey and the
colt, laid their clothes on them, and set Him on them.
Mat
21:8 And
a very great multitude spread
their clothes on the road; others cut down
branches from the trees and spread them
on the road.
Mat
21:9 Then
the multitudes who went before
and those who followed cried out, saying: "Hosanna
to the Son of David!
'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!'
Hosanna in the
highest!"
Notice that the disciples did not understand
at first, but later they
did.
Joh
12:14 Then
Jesus, when He had found a
young donkey, sat on it; as it is written:
Joh
12:15 "FEAR
NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD,
YOUR KING IS
COMING, SITTING ON A DONKEY'S COLT."
Joh
12:16 His
disciples did not understand
these things at first; but when Jesus was
glorified, then they remembered that
these things were written about Him and that
they had done these things to Him.
Joh
12:17 Therefore
the people, who were
with Him when He called Lazarus out of his tomb
and raised him from the dead,
bore witness.
Joh
12:18 For
this reason the people also
met Him, because they heard that He had done this
sign.
Joh
12:19 The
Pharisees therefore said among
themselves, "You see that you are accomplishing
nothing. Look, the world
has gone after Him!"
The disciples
praised Him.
Luk
19:37 Then,
as He was now drawing near
the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole
multitude of the disciples began
to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for
all the mighty works they had
seen,
Luk
19:38 saying:
" 'BLESSED IS THE
KING WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!' Peace in
heaven and glory in the
highest!"
Luk
19:39 And
some of the Pharisees called
to Him from the crowd, "Teacher, rebuke Your
disciples."
Luk
19:40 But
He answered and said to them, "I
tell you that if these should keep silent, the
stones
would immediately cry out."
Luk
19:41 Now
as He drew near, He saw the
city and wept over it,
Luk
19:42 saying, "If
you had known, even you, especially in this your
day,
the things that make
for your
peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes.
Luk
19:43 For
days will come upon you when your enemies will
build an embankment around you,
surround you and close you in on every side,
Luk
19:44 and
level you, and your children within you, to the
ground; and they will not leave
in you one stone upon another, because you did
not know the time of your
visitation."
Notice the
people
knew who He was.
Mat
21:10 And
when He had come into Jerusalem,
all the city
was moved, saying, "Who is this?"
Mat
21:11 So
the multitudes said, "This
is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth
of Galilee."
4 Days
before Christs Death
In this next
verse it is doubtful that He stayed with Lazarus
Mary and Martha, because the
Pharisees had threatened to kill Lazarus, and also
if Christ had stayed there,
the ladies would have certainly given Him breakfast
before He departed.
Notice how He was hungry.
Mar
11:12 Now
the next day, when they had
come out from Bethany, He was hungry.
Mar
11:13 And
seeing from afar a fig tree
having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would
find something on it. When He
came to it, He found nothing but leaves, for it
was not the season for figs.
Mar
11:14 In
response Jesus said to it, "Let
no one eat fruit from you ever again." And His disciples heard it.
Mat
21:12 Then
Jesus went into the temple of God and
drove out all those who bought
and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables
of the money changers and the
seats of those who sold doves.
Mat
21:13 And
He said to them, "It
is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF
PRAYER,' but you have made it a 'DEN OF
THIEVES.'"
Mat
21:14 Then
the blind and the
lame came to Him in the temple, and He healed
them.
Mat
21:15 But
when the chief priests and scribes
saw the wonderful things that He did, and the
children crying out in the temple
and saying, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they
were indignant
Mat
21:16 and
said to Him, "Do You hear
what these are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes.
Have you never read, 'OUT OF THE MOUTH OF BABES
AND NURSING INFANTS YOU HAVE PERFECTED PRAISE'?"
Mar
11:18 And
the scribes and chief priests
heard it and sought how they might destroy Him;
for they feared Him, because
all the people were astonished at His teaching.
Some of the
Greeks wanted to see Christ.
Joh
12:20 Now
there were certain Greeks
among those who came up to worship at the feast.
Joh
12:21 Then
they came to Philip, who was
from Bethsaida of Galilee, and asked him, saying,
"Sir, we wish to see Jesus."
Joh
12:22 Philip
came and told Andrew, and
in turn Andrew and Philip told Jesus.
Joh
12:23 But
Jesus answered them, saying, "The
hour has come that the Son of Man should be
glorified.
Joh
12:24 Most
assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat
falls into the ground and
dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it
produces much grain.
Joh
12:25 He
who loves his life will
lose it, and he who hates his life in this world
will keep it for eternal life.
Joh
12:26 If
anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I
am, there My servant will be
also. If anyone serves Me, him My
Father will honor.
Joh
12:27 "Now
My soul is troubled, and what shall I say?
'Father, save Me from this hour'?
But for this purpose I came to this hour.
The Father
speaks
to Christ, and others heard the Father
Joh
12:28 Father,
glorify Your name." Then a voice came
from heaven, saying,
"I
have both glorified it
and will
glorify it
again."
When the Father
spoke it was for the people’s benefit.
Joh
12:29 Therefore
the people who stood by
and heard it
said that it had
thundered. Others said, "An angel has spoken to
Him."
Joh
12:30 Jesus
answered and said, "This
voice did not come because of Me, but for your
sake.
Satan is cast
out.
Joh
12:31 Now
is the judgment of this
world; now the ruler of this world will be cast
out.
Joh
12:32 And I,
if I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all
peoples to Myself."
Among the chief
rulers many believed but they loved the praises of
men more than the praise of
God.
Joh
12:42 Nevertheless
even among the rulers
many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees
they did not confess Him,
lest they should be put out of
the synagogue;
Joh
12:43 for
they loved the praise of men
more than the praise of God.
Mar
11:19 When
evening had come, He went out
of the city.
3 Days
before Christs death
Mar
11:20 Now
in the morning, as they passed
by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
Mar
11:21 And
Peter, remembering, said to
Him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed
has withered away."
Mar
11:22 So
Jesus answered and said to
them, "Have faith in
God.
Mar
11:23 For
assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this
mountain, 'Be removed and be cast
into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart,
but believes that those things
he says will be done, he will have whatever he
says.
Mar
11:24 Therefore
I say to you,
whatever things you ask when you pray, believe
that you receive them,
and you will have them.
Mar
11:25 "And
whenever you stand praying, if you have anything
against anyone, forgive him,
that your Father in heaven may also forgive you
your trespasses.
Mar
11:26 But if
you do not forgive, neither will your Father in
heaven forgive your
trespasses."
The chief
priests
and elders test His authority.
Mat
21:23 Now
when He came into the temple,
the chief priests and the elders of the people
confronted Him as He was
teaching, and said, "By what authority are You
doing these things? And who
gave You this authority?"
Mat
21:24 But
Jesus answered and said to
them, "I also will ask
you one thing, which if
you tell Me, I likewise will tell you by what
authority I do these things:
Mat
21:25 The
baptism of John where was it from? From heaven
or from men?" And
they reasoned among themselves, saying, "If we
say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Why then
did you not believe him?'
Mat
21:26 But
if we say, 'From men,' we fear
the multitude, for all count John as a prophet."
Mat
21:27 So
they answered Jesus and said,
"We do not know." And He said to them,
"Neither will I tell you
by what authority I do these things.
Mat
21:28 "But
what do you think? A man had two sons, and he
came to the first and said, 'Son,
go, work today in my vineyard.'
Mat
21:29 He
answered and said, 'I will not,' but afterward
he regretted it and went.
Mat
21:30 Then he
came to the second and said likewise. And he
answered and said, 'I go,
sir,' but he did not go.
Mat
21:31 Which
of the two did the will of his
father?" They
said to Him, "The
first." Jesus said to them, "Assuredly,
I say to you that tax collectors and harlots
enter the kingdom of God
before you.
Mat
21:32 For
John came to you in the way of righteousness,
and you did not believe him; but
tax collectors and harlots believed him; and
when you saw it,
you did not afterward relent and
believe him.
Mat
21:33 "Hear
another parable: There was a certain landowner
who planted a vineyard and set a
hedge around it, dug a winepress in it and built
a tower. And he leased it to
vinedressers and went into a far country.
Mat
21:34 Now
when vintage-time drew
near, he sent his servants to the vinedressers,
that they might receive its
fruit.
Mat
21:35 And the
vinedressers took his servants, beat one, killed
one, and stoned another.
Mat
21:36 Again
he sent other servants, more than the first, and
they did likewise to them.
Mat
21:37 Then
last of all he sent his son to them, saying,
'They will respect my son.'
Mat
21:38 But
when the vinedressers saw the son, they said
among themselves, 'This is the
heir. Come, let us kill him and seize his
inheritance.'
Mat
21:39 So they
took him and cast him
out of
the vineyard and killed him.
Mat
21:40 "Therefore,
when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will
he do to those
vinedressers?"
Mat
21:41 They
said to Him, "He will
destroy those wicked men miserably, and lease his vineyard to other
vinedressers who will render to him the
fruits in their seasons."
Mat
21:42 Jesus
said to them, "Have
you never read in the Scriptures: 'THE STONE
WHICH
THE BUILDERS REJECTED HAS BECOME THE CHIEF
CORNERSTONE. THIS WAS THE LORD'S
DOING, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES'?
Mat
21:43 "Therefore
I say to you, the kingdom of God
will be taken from
you and given to a nation bearing the fruits of
it.
Mat
21:44 And
whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but
on whomever it falls, it will
grind him to powder."
Luk
20:19 And
the chief priests and the
scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him,
but they feared the people for
they knew He had spoken this parable against them.
Luk
20:20 So
they watched Him,
and sent spies who pretended to
be righteous, that they might seize on His words,
in order to deliver Him to
the power and the authority of the governor.
Luk
20:21 Then
they asked Him, saying,
"Teacher, we know that You say and teach rightly,
and You do not show
personal favoritism, but teach the way of God in
truth:
Luk
20:22 Is
it lawful for us to pay taxes
to Caesar or not?"
Luk
20:23 But
He perceived their craftiness,
and said to them, "Why do you test Me?
Luk
20:24 Show Me
a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it
have?" They
answered and said, "Caesar's."
Luk
20:25 And
He said to them, "Render
therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's,
and to God the things that
are God's."
Luk
20:26 But
they could not catch Him in
His words in the presence of the people. And they
marveled at His answer and
kept silent.
Christ spoke to
them in parables and told them the parable of the
marriage feast.
Mat 22:1 And
Jesus answered and spoke to them again by
parables and said:
Mat
22:2 "The
kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who
arranged a marriage for his son,
Mat
22:3 and
sent out his servants to call those who were
invited to the wedding; and they
were not willing to come.
Mat
22:4 Again,
he sent out other servants, saying, 'Tell those
who are invited, "See, I
have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted
cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the
wedding." '
Mat
22:5 But
they made light of it and went their ways, one
to his own farm, another to his
business.
Mat
22:6 And
the rest seized his
servants, treated them
spitefully, and killed them.
Mat
22:7 But
when the king heard about it,
he was furious. And he sent out his armies,
destroyed those murderers, and
burned up their city.
Mat
22:8 Then he
said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but
those who were invited were
not worthy.
Mat
22:9 Therefore
go into the highways, and as many as you find,
invite to the wedding.'
Mat
22:10 So
those servants went out into the highways and
gathered together all whom they
found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests.
Mat
22:11 "But
when the king came in to see the guests, he saw
a man there who did not have on
a wedding garment.
Mat
22:12 So he
said to him, 'Friend, how did you come in here
without a wedding garment?' And
he was speechless.
Mat
22:13 Then
the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand
and foot, take him away, and cast
him
into outer darkness; there
will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'
Mat
22:14 "For
many are called, but few are
chosen."
Mat
22:15 Then
the Pharisees went and
plotted how they might entangle Him in His
talk.
Later on the
Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection
questioned Him.
Mar
12:18 Then
some Sadducees, who say there is
no resurrection, came to Him;
and they asked Him, saying:
Mar
12:19 "Teacher,
Moses wrote to us
that if a man's brother dies, and leaves his
wife behind, and leaves no children, his brother
should take his wife and raise
up offspring for his brother.
Mar
12:20 Now
there were seven brothers. The
first took a wife; and dying, he left no
offspring.
Mar
12:21 And
the second took her, and he
died; nor did he leave any offspring. And the
third likewise.
Mar
12:22 So
the seven had her and left no
offspring. Last of all the woman died also.
Mar
12:23 Therefore,
in the resurrection,
when they rise, whose wife will she be? For all
seven had her as wife."
Christ
corrected
them.
Mar
12:24 Jesus
answered and said to them, "Are
you not therefore mistaken, because you do not
know
the Scriptures nor the power of God?
Mar
12:25 For
when they rise from the dead, they neither marry
nor are given in marriage, but
are like angels in heaven.
One of the
scribes asked.
What is the greatest
commandment?
Mar
12:28 Then
one of the scribes came, and
having heard them reasoning together, perceiving
that He had answered them
well, asked Him, "Which is the first commandment
of all?"
Mar
12:29 Jesus
answered him, "The
first of all the commandments is:
'HEAR, O ISRAEL,
THE LORD OUR GOD, THE LORD
IS ONE.
Mar
12:30 AND
YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD
YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL,
WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH
ALL YOUR STRENGTH.' This is the
first commandment.
Mar
12:31 And the
second, like it, is
this: 'YOU
SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' There is
no other commandment greater
than these."
Notice that the
scribe knew that there was one God {this is
referring to the Father, He is the
One True God}.
Mar
12:32 So
the scribe said to Him,
"Well said,
Teacher. You
have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and
there is no other but He.
Mar
12:33 And
to love Him with all the
heart, with all the understanding, with all the
soul, and with all the
strength, and to love one's neighbor as oneself,
is more than all the whole
burnt offerings and sacrifices."
Mar
12:34 Now
when Jesus saw that he
answered wisely, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom
of God."
But after that no one
dared question Him.
Christ
continued
to teach in the temple.
Mar
12:35 Then
Jesus answered and said,
while He taught in the temple, "How
is it
that the scribes say that the
Christ is the Son of David?
Mar
12:36 For
David himself said by the Holy Spirit: 'THE LORD
SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT
MY RIGHT HAND, TILL I MAKE YOUR ENEMIES YOUR
FOOTSTOOL." '
Mar
12:37 Therefore
David himself calls Him 'LORD'; how is He then his Son?" And the
common people heard Him gladly.
Mar
12:38 Then
He said to them in His
teaching, "Beware
of the scribes,
who desire to go around in long robes, love
greetings in the marketplaces,
Mar
12:39 the
best seats in the synagogues, and the best
places at feasts,
Mar
12:40 who
devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make
long prayers. These will receive
greater condemnation."
Mat 23:1 Then
Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to His
disciples,
Mat
23:2 saying: "The
scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat.
Mat
23:3 Therefore
whatever they tell you to observe, that
observe and do, but do not do according to their
works; for they say, and do
not do.
Mat
23:4 For
they bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but
they themselves will not move them
with one of their fingers.
Mat
23:5 But
all their works they do to
be seen by men. They make their phylacteries broad
and enlarge the borders of
their garments.
Mat
23:6 They
love the best places at feasts, the best seats
in the synagogues,
Mat
23:7 greetings
in the marketplaces, and to be called by men,
'Rabbi, Rabbi.'
Mat
23:8 But
you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your
Teacher, the Christ, and you are
all brethren.
Mat
23:9 Do
not call anyone on earth
your father; for One is your Father, He who is in
heaven.
Mat
23:10 And do
not be called teachers; for One is your Teacher,
the Christ.
Mat
23:11 But he
who is greatest among you shall be your servant.
Mat
23:12 And
whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he
who humbles himself will be
exalted.
Mat
23:13 "But
woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you shut up the kingdom of
heaven against men; for you neither go in
yourselves, nor do you allow those
who are entering to go in.
Mat
23:14 Woe
to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows'
houses, and for a pretence make
long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater
condemnation.
Mat
23:15 "Woe
to you, scribes and
Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea
to win one proselyte, and
when he is won, you make him twice as much a son
of hell as yourselves.
Mat
23:16 "Woe
to you, blind
guides, who say, 'Whoever swears by the temple, it
is nothing; but whoever
swears by the gold of the temple, he is obliged to perform it.'
Mat
23:17 Fools
and blind! For which is greater, the gold or the
temple that sanctifies the
gold?
Mat
23:18 And,
'Whoever swears by the altar, it is nothing; but
whoever swears by the gift
that is on it, he is obliged to
perform it.'
Mat
23:19 Fools
and blind! For which is greater, the gift or the
altar that sanctifies the
gift?
Mat
23:20 Therefore
he who swears by the altar, swears by it and by
all things on it.
Mat
23:21 He who
swears by the temple, swears by it and by Him
who dwells in it.
Mat
23:22 And he
who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of
God and by Him who sits on it.
Mat
23:23 "Woe
to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For
you pay tithe of mint and anise
and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and
mercy and faith. These you ought
to have done, without leaving the others undone.
Mat
23:24 Blind
guides, who strain out a
gnat and swallow a camel!
Mat
23:25 "Woe
to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For
you cleanse the outside of the
cup and dish, but inside they are full of
extortion and self-indulgence.
Mat
23:26 Blind
Pharisee, first cleanse the inside of the cup
and dish, that the outside of
them may be clean also.
Mat
23:27 "Woe
to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For
you are like whitewashed tombs
which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but
inside are full of dead men's
bones and all uncleanness.
Mat
23:28 Even so
you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but
inside you are full of
hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Mat
23:29 "Woe
to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
Because you build the tombs of the
prophets and adorn the monuments of the
righteous,
Mat
23:30 and
say, 'If we had lived in the days of our
fathers, we would not have been
partakers with them in the blood of the
prophets.'
Mat
23:31 "Therefore
you are witnesses against yourselves that you
are sons of those who murdered
the prophets.
Mat
23:32 Fill up,
then, the measure of your fathers' guilt.
Mat
23:33 Serpents,
brood of vipers! How can you escape the
condemnation of hell?
Mat
23:34 Therefore,
indeed, I send you prophets, wise men, and
scribes: some of them you will kill and
crucify, and some
of them you will scourge in your
synagogues and persecute from city to city,
Mat
23:35 that on
you may come all the righteous blood shed on the
earth, from the blood of
righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, son of
Berechiah, whom you murdered
between the temple and the altar.
Mat
23:36 Assuredly,
I say to you, all these things will come upon
this generation.
Mat
23:37 "O
Jerusalem, Jerusalem,
the one who kills the prophets and stones those
who are sent to her! How often
I wanted to gather your children together, as a
hen gathers her chicks under her
wings, but you were not willing!
Mat
23:38 See!
Your house is left to you desolate;
Mat
23:39 for I
say to you, you shall see Me no more till you
say, 'BLESSED is HE WHO COMES IN
THE NAME OF THE LORD!' "
Then Jesus
observed from the treasury.
Mar
12:41 Now
Jesus sat opposite the
treasury and saw how the people put money into the
treasury. And many who were
rich put in much.
Mar
12:42 Then
one poor widow came and threw
in two mites, which make a quadrans.
Mar
12:43 So
He called His disciples to Himself
and said to them, "Assuredly,
I say to you that this poor widow has put in
more than all those who have given to the
treasury;
Mar
12:44 for
they all put in out of their abundance, but she
out of her poverty put in all
that she had, her whole livelihood."
Jesus then left
the temple and told the disciples the Mount
Olivet
prophesy.
Mar 13:1 Then as
He went out of the temple, one of His
disciples said to Him, "Teacher, see what manner
of stones and what
buildings are here!"
Mar
13:2 And
Jesus answered and said to him, "Do you see
these great buildings? Not one
stone shall be left upon another, that shall not
be thrown down."
Mar
13:3 Now
as He sat on the Mount of
Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John,
and Andrew asked Him privately,
Mar
13:4 "Tell
us, when will these
things be? And what will be
the
sign when all these things will be fulfilled?"
Mar
13:5 And
Jesus, answering them, began to
say: "Take heed that
no one deceives you.
Mar
13:6 For
many will come in My name, saying, 'I am He,'
and will deceive many.
Mar
13:7 But
when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not
be troubled; for such things
must happen, but the end is
not yet.
Mar
13:8 For
nation will rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom. And there will be
earthquakes in various places, and there will be
famines and troubles. These are
the beginnings of sorrows.
Mar
13:9 "But
watch out for yourselves, for they will deliver
you up to councils, and you
will be beaten in the synagogues. You will be
brought before rulers and kings
for My sake, for a testimony to them.
Mar
13:10 And the
gospel must first be preached to all the
nations.
Mar
13:11 But
when they arrest you
and
deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or
premeditate what you will speak.
But whatever is given you in that hour, speak
that; for it is not you who
speak, but the Holy Spirit.
Mar
13:12 Now
brother will betray brother to death, and a
father his child; and children will
rise up against parents and cause
them to be put to death.
Mar
13:13 And you
will be hated by all for My name's sake. But he
who endures to the end shall be
saved.
Mar
13:14 "So
when you see the 'ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION,'
spoken of by Daniel the prophet,
standing where it ought not" (let the
reader understand), "then let those who are
in Judea flee
to the mountains.
Mar
13:15 Let him
who is on the housetop not go down into the
house, nor enter to take anything
out of his house.
Mar
13:16 And let
him who is in the field not go back to get his
clothes.
Mar
13:17 But woe
to those who are pregnant and to those who are
nursing babies in those days!
Mar
13:18 And
pray that your flight may not be in winter.
Mar
13:19 For in
those days there will be
tribulation, such as has not been since the
beginning of the creation which God
created until this time, nor ever shall be.
Mar
13:20 And
unless the Lord had shortened those days, no
flesh would be saved; but for the
elect's sake, whom He chose, He shortened the
days.
Mar
13:21 "Then
if anyone says to you, 'Look, here is
the Christ!' or, 'Look, He is
there!' do not believe it.
Mar
13:22 For
false christs and false prophets will rise and
show signs and wonders to
deceive, if possible, even the elect.
Mar
13:23 But
take heed; see, I have told you all things
beforehand.
Mar
13:24 "But
in those days, after that tribulation, the sun
will be darkened, and the moon
will not give its light;
Mar
13:25 the
stars of heaven will fall, and the powers in the
heavens will be shaken.
Mar
13:26 Then
they will see the Son of Man coming in the
clouds with great power and glory.
Mar
13:27 And
then He will send His angels, and gather
together His elect from the four
winds, from the farthest part of earth to the
farthest part of heaven.
Mar
13:28 "Now
learn this parable from the fig tree: When its
branch has already become
tender, and puts forth leaves, you know that
summer is near.
Mar
13:29 So you
also, when you see these things happening, know
that it is near at the doors!
Mar
13:30 Assuredly,
I say to you, this generation will by no means
pass away till all these things
take place.
Mar
13:31 Heaven
and earth will pass away, but My words will by
no means pass away.
Mar
13:32 "But
of that day and hour no one knows, not even the
angels in heaven, nor the Son,
but only the Father.
Mar
13:33 Take
heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when
the time is.
Mar
13:34 It
is like a man going to a far
country, who left his house and
gave authority to his servants, and to each his
work, and commanded the
doorkeeper to watch.
Mar
13:35 Watch
therefore, for you do not know when the master
of the house is coming in the
evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the
rooster, or in the morning
Mar
13:36 lest,
coming suddenly, he find you sleeping.
Mar
13:37 And
what I say to you, I say to all: Watch!"
Mat 25:1 "Then the kingdom of heaven
shall be likened to ten
virgins who took their lamps and went out to
meet the bridegroom.
Mat
25:2 Now
five of them were wise,
and five were
foolish.
Mat
25:3 Those
who were
foolish took their
lamps and took no oil with them,
Mat
25:4 but the
wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
Mat
25:5 But
while the bridegroom was delayed, they all
slumbered and slept.
Mat
25:6 "And
at midnight a cry
was heard:
'Behold, the
bridegroom is coming; go out to meet him!'
Mat
25:7 Then
all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps.
Mat
25:8 And
the foolish said to the
wise, 'Give us some
of your
oil, for our lamps are going out.'
Mat
25:9 But the
wise answered, saying, 'No,
lest there should not be enough for us and you;
but go rather to those who
sell, and buy for yourselves.'
Mat
25:10 And
while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and
those who were ready went in
with him to the wedding; and the door was shut.
Mat
25:11 "Afterward
the other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord,
Lord, open to us!'
Mat
25:12 But he
answered and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I
do not know you.'
Mat
25:13 "Watch
therefore, for you know neither the day nor the
hour in which the Son of Man is
coming.
Mat
25:14 "For
the
kingdom of heaven is like a
man traveling to a far country, who
called his own servants and delivered his goods
to them.
Mat
25:15 And to
one he gave five talents, to another two, and to
another one, to each according
to his own ability; and immediately he went on a
journey.
Mat
25:16 Then
he who had received the
five talents went and traded with them, and made
another five talents.
Mat
25:17 And
likewise he who had received
two gained two more
also.
Mat
25:18 But he
who had received one went and dug in the ground,
and hid his lord's money.
Mat
25:19 After
a long time the lord of
those servants came and settled accounts with
them.
Mat
25:20 "So
he who had received
five talents came and brought five other talents,
saying, 'Lord, you delivered
to me five talents; look, I have gained five more
talents besides them.'
Mat
25:21 His
lord said to him, 'Well done,
good and faithful servant; you were faithful
over a few things, I will make you
ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of
your lord.'
Mat
25:22 He also
who had received two talents came and said,
'Lord, you delivered to me two
talents; look, I have gained two more talents
besides them.'
Mat
25:23 His
lord said to him, 'Well done,
good and faithful servant; you have been
faithful over a few things, I will
make you ruler over many things. Enter into the
joy of your lord.'
Mat
25:24 "Then
he who had received the one talent came and
said, 'Lord, I knew you to be a
hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and
gathering where you have not
scattered seed.
Mat
25:25 And I
was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the
ground. Look, there
you have what is
yours.'
Mat
25:26 "But
his lord answered and said to him, 'You wicked
and lazy servant, you knew that
I reap where I have not sown, and gather where I
have not scattered seed.
Mat
25:27 So you
ought to have deposited my money with the
bankers, and at my coming I would
have received back my own with interest.
Mat
25:28 So take
the talent from him, and give it
to him who has ten talents.
Mat
25:29 'For to
everyone who has, more will be given, and he
will have abundance; but from him
who does not have, even what he has will be
taken away.
Mat
25:30 And
cast the unprofitable servant into the outer
darkness. There will be weeping
and gnashing of teeth.'
Mat
25:31 "When
the Son of Man comes in His glory, and all the
holy angels with Him, then He
will sit on the throne of His glory.
Mat
25:32 All the
nations will be gathered before Him, and He will
separate them one from
another, as a shepherd divides his
sheep from the goats.
Mat
25:33 And He
will set the sheep on His right hand, but the
goats on the left.
Mat
25:34 Then
the King will say to those on His right hand,
'Come, you blessed of My Father,
inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the
foundation of the world:
Mat
25:35 for I
was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty
and you gave Me drink; I was a
stranger and you took Me in;
Mat
25:36 I was
naked and you clothed Me; I was
sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you
came to Me.'
Mat
25:37 "Then
the righteous will answer Him, saying, 'Lord,
when did we see You hungry and
feed You,
or thirsty and give You
drink?
Mat
25:38 When
did we see You a stranger and take You
in, or naked and clothe You?
Mat
25:39 Or when
did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to
You?'
Mat
25:40 And the
King will answer and say to them, 'Assuredly, I
say to you, inasmuch as you did
it
to one of the least of these
My brethren, you did it
to Me.'
Mat
25:41 "Then
He will also say to those on the left hand,
'Depart from Me, you cursed, into
the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and
his angels:
Mat
25:42 for I
was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was
thirsty and you gave Me no drink;
Mat
25:43 I was a
stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and
you did not clothe Me, sick and
in prison and you did not visit Me.'
Mat
25:44 "Then
they also will answer Him, saying, 'Lord, when
did we see You hungry or thirsty
or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and
did not minister to You?'
Mat
25:45 Then He
will answer them, saying, 'Assuredly, I say to
you, inasmuch as you did not do it
to one of the least of these, you
did not do it
to Me.'
Mat
25:46 And
these will go away into
everlasting punishment, but the righteous into
eternal life."
Jesus stayed at
the Mount of Olives
at night time.
Luk
21:37 And
in the daytime He was teaching
in the temple, but at night He went out and stayed
on the mountain called
Olivet.
2 Days
before Christs Death.
Luk
21:38 Then
early in the morning all the
people came to Him in the temple to hear Him.
Mat
26:2 "You
know that after two days is the Passover, and
the Son of Man will be delivered
up to be crucified."
Mat
26:3 Then
the chief priests, the
scribes, and the elders of the people assembled at
the palace of the high
priest, who was called Caiaphas,
Mat
26:4 and
plotted to take Jesus by
trickery and kill Him.
Mar
14:2 But
they said, "Not during the
feast, lest there be an uproar of the people."
It was at this
time that Judas Iscariot went to the Chief priests
and arranged to betray
Christ.
Mat
26:14 Then
one of the twelve, called
Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests
Mat
26:15 and
said, "What are you
willing to give me if I deliver Him to you?" And
they counted out to him
thirty pieces of silver.
Mat
26:16 So
from that time he sought
opportunity to betray Him.
Judas the
brother
of Christ also went to the Chief priests to arrange
for Christ’s arrest. It is
not stated exactly when he went, but it was possibly
at this time as he had
prearranged with them that he would kiss Christ and
then they could arrest Him.
We would like to state at this point that Judas the
brother of Christ did not
know that Christ would be put to death, he thought
he would be put in prison or
something similar. Notice in Mark 14 v 44,
they were to take Him away
safely.
When the brother realised what was going to happen
to Christ, he returned the
30 pieces of silver and hung himself. Notice
Judas the brother of Christ stated Christ was
innocent, see Matt 27 v 3-5.
Christ is
anointed for His burial.
Mat
26:6 And
when Jesus was in Bethany at
the house of
Simon the leper,
Mat
26:7 a
woman came to Him having an
alabaster flask of very costly fragrant oil, and
she poured it on
His head as He sat at the table.
Mat
26:8 But
when His disciples saw it,
they were indignant, saying,
"Why this waste?
Mat
26:9 For
this fragrant oil might have
been sold for much and given to the
poor."
Mat
26:10 But
when Jesus was aware of it, He
said to them, "Why
do you trouble the woman? For she has done a
good
work for Me.
Mat
26:11 For you
have the poor with you always, but Me you do not
have always.
Mat
26:12 For in
pouring this fragrant oil on My body, she did it for My burial.
Mat
26:13 Assuredly,
I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached
in the whole world, what this
woman has done will also be told as a memorial
to her."
Satan enters
Judas.
Luk
22:3 Then
Satan entered Judas, surnamed
Iscariot, who was numbered among the twelve.
Luk
22:4 So
he went his way and conferred
with the chief priests and captains, how he might
betray Him to them.
Luk
22:5 And
they were glad, and agreed to
give him money.
Luk
22:6 So
he promised and sought
opportunity to betray Him to them in the absence
of the multitude.
One Day
before Christs Death
The Passover
was
on Wednesday that year, the 14th of Nisan.
Because Jesus was the Passover
lamb, He had to take the Passover with His disciples
a day early. He
had to die at the time the Passover lambs
were killed. The lambs were killed around 3pm
– 5pm on Wednesday
afternoon, Christ died at 3pm Wednesday afternoon. The Jews had
the Passover service that evening
after sunset. That
is the correct time
to take the Passover.
As stated Christ
had to take it one day early as He had to die at the
time of the Passover
lambs.
Joh
18:28 Then
they led Jesus from Caiaphas
to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But
they themselves did not go
into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled,
but that they might eat the
Passover.
On Tuesday the
13th in the afternoon, the disciples asked Christ,
where will we prepare the
Passover?
Mat
26:17 Now
on the first day of the
Feast of Unleavened Bread
the disciples came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where
do You want us to
prepare for You to eat the Passover?"
Christ told
them
where they were to prepare the Passover.
Notice that the Passover is
prepared.
Mar
14:15 Then
he will show you a large
upper room, furnished and
prepared; there make ready for us."
Mar
14:16 So
His disciples went out, and
came into the city, and found it just as He had
said to them; and they prepared
the Passover.
Now we come to
the all important eating of the Passover meal.
Notice that it happens
after sunset, the next day. The Passover was
prepared on the Tuesday
afternoon, now it is eaten after sunset, the next
day, the beginning of
Wednesday.
Mat
26:19 So
the disciples did as Jesus had
directed them; and they prepared the Passover.
Mat
26:20 When
evening had come, He sat down
with the twelve.
The next events
which happened in the last day of Christ’s life, are
set out in detail in a
companion article at this site called “The Last Day
of Christ’s Life”.
This article goes through the 4 gospel accounts of
the final 24 hours of the
life of Christ, and gives an in depth coverage of
this time.
