What happened in
the last day of Christ’s life?
Do all the
gospels match all the events?
When was Christ
crucified?
Why is there two
different times of day given in the bible for the
crucifixion?
Let’s look at the
accounts of the last 24 hours of Christ’s life from the
gospels and let’s answer the questions on this all
important subject.
A few days before
the Passover, the scriptures state that the chief
priests and elders were gathered together to plot to
seize and kill Jesus.
Mat 26:2 "You know that after two days is
the Passover, and the Son of Man will be delivered
up to be crucified."
Mat 26:3 Then the
chief priests, the scribes, and the elders of the
people assembled at the palace of the high priest, who
was called Caiaphas,
Mat 26:4 and plotted
to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him.
Jesus was in Bethany,
at Simon’s home, and a woman anointed His body for
burial.
Mat 26:6 And when
Jesus was in Bethany
at the house of Simon the leper,
Mat 26:7 a woman came
to Him having an alabaster flask of very costly
fragrant oil, and she poured it on His
head as He sat at the table.
Mat 26:12 For in pouring this fragrant oil
on My body, she did it for My burial.
Satan enters Judas.
Luk 22:3 Then Satan
entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered
among the twelve.
When Christ was in
Bethany Judas went his way and left the group to go and
arrange with the chief priests the betrayal of Christ.
Luk 22:4 So he went
his way and conferred with the chief priests and
captains, how he might betray Him to them.
Judas Iscariot went
to the chief priests and received 30 pieces of silver to
betray Jesus and hand Him over to them.
Mat 26:14 Then one of
the twelve, called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief
priests
Mat 26:15 and said,
"What are you willing to give me if I deliver Him to
you?" And they counted out to him thirty pieces of
silver.
Also around this
same time Judas the brother of Christ also went to the
chief priests to arrange for the arrest of Christ.
He prearranged that he would kiss Christ and then they
could take Him away safely.
We would like to point out that the brother of Christ
did not know Christ was going to be put to death, he
assumed that He would be put in prison or something
similar, notice the brother wanted Him lead away safely
see Mark 14 v 44. Notice
further that when the brother realised Christ was going
to die he returned the 30 pieces of silver and hung
himself. Stating Christ was innocent. Matt.
27 v 3-5.
Now we come to the
24 hours prior to Christ’s death.
The Passover was on Wednesday that year, the 14th of
Nisan. Because Jesus was the Passover lamb, He had
to take the Passover with His disciples a day early. He had to die at
the time the Passover lambs were killed. The lambs
were killed around 3pm – 5pm on Wednesday afternoon,
Christ died at 3pm Wednesday afternoon. He was the
Passover lamb.
On Tuesday the 13th
in the afternoon, the disciples asked Christ where will
we prepare the Passover?
Mat 26:17 Now on the
first day of
the Feast of Unleavened Bread the disciples
came to Jesus, saying to Him, "Where do You want us to
prepare for You to eat the Passover?"
Christ told them
where they were to prepare the Passover. Notice
that the Passover is prepared.
Mar 14:15 Then he will show you a large
upper room, furnished and
prepared; there make ready for us."
Mar 14:16 So His
disciples went out, and came into the city, and found
it just as He had said to them; and they prepared the
Passover.
Now we come to the
all important eating of the Passover meal. Notice
that it happens after sunset, the start of the next
day. The Passover was prepared on the Tuesday
afternoon, now it is eaten after sunset, the next day,
the beginning of Wednesday. Possibly
around 7 pm the beginning of the 15th.
POSSIBLY AROUND
7 PM.
Mat 26:20 When evening
had come, He sat down with the twelve.
Mat 26:21 Now as they
were eating, He said, "Assuredly,
I say to you, one of you will betray Me."
Christ desired to
keep the Passover with His disciples.
Luk 22:15 Then He said
to them, "With
fervent
desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you
before I suffer;
Luk 22:16 for I say to you, I will no longer
eat of it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom
of God."
Christ states that
one of them will betray Him.
Mar 14:18 Now as they
sat and ate, Jesus said, "Assuredly,
I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will
betray Me."
Mar 14:19 And they
began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, "Is it I?"
And another said,
"Is it
I?"
During the meal,
Christ offers the disciples bread.
Mar 14:22 And as they
were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed and broke it, and
gave it
to them and said, "Take,
eat; this is My body."
When the meal was
ended Christ offered the wine.
Luk 22:20 Likewise He
also took
the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new
covenant in My blood, which is shed for you.
Christ said He
would not drink of the vine until the kingdom.
Mar 14:25 Assuredly, I say to you, I will no
longer drink of the fruit of the vine until that day
when I drink it new in the kingdom of God."
Christ introduced
the foot washing.
Joh 13:4 rose from
supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and
girded Himself.
Joh 13:5 After that,
He poured water into a basin and began to wash the
disciples' feet, and to wipe them with
the towel with which He was girded.
Joh 13:6 Then He came
to Simon Peter. And Peter said
to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?"
Joh 13:7 Jesus
answered and said to him, "What
I am doing you do not understand now, but you will
know after this."
Joh 13:8 Peter said
to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered
him, "If
I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."
Joh 13:9 Simon Peter
said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands
and my
head!"
Joh 13:10 Jesus said
to him, "He
who is bathed needs only to wash his
feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean,
but not all of you."
Joh 13:11 For He knew
who would betray Him; therefore He said, "You
are not all clean."
Joh 13:12 So when He
had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat
down again, He said to them, "Do
you know what I have done to you?
Joh 13:13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and
you say well, for so I am.
Joh 13:14 If I then, your
Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also
ought to wash one another's feet.
Joh 13:15 For I have given you an example,
that you should do as I have done to you.
Joh 13:16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a
servant is not greater than his master; nor is he
who is sent greater than he who sent him.
Joh 13:17 If you know these things, blessed
are you if you do them.
Joh 13:18 "I do not speak concerning all of
you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the
Scripture may be fulfilled, 'HE WHO EATS BREAD WITH
ME HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.'
Joh 13:19 Now I tell you before it comes,
that when it does come to pass, you may believe that
I am He.
Joh 13:20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he
who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who
receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
Christ said again
that one of them would betray Him.
Luk 22:21 But behold, the hand of My
betrayer is
with Me on the table.
The disciples
wondered who it was who was going to betray Christ.
Luk 22:23 Then they
began to question among themselves, which of them it
was who would do this thing.
John was the
disciple Jesus loved.
Joh 13:23 Now there
was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom
Jesus loved.
Peter asked John to
ask Christ who it was who was going to betray Him.
Joh 13:24 Simon Peter
therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He
spoke.
John asked who it
was.
Joh 13:25 Then,
leaning back on Jesus' breast, he said to Him, "Lord,
who is it?"
Judas identified by
Christ.
Joh 13:26 Jesus
answered, "It
is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I
have dipped it."
And having dipped the bread,
He gave it
to Judas Iscariot, the son
of Simon.
Then they
had a disagreement about who was the greatest.
Luk 22:24 Now there
was also a dispute among them, as to which of them
should be considered the greatest.
Christ addressed
their argument.
Luk 22:25 And He said
to them, "The
kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them,
and those who exercise authority over them are
called 'benefactors.'
Luk 22:26 But not so among
you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you,
let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he
who serves.
Luk 22:27 For who is
greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves?
Is
it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you
as the One who serves.
Luk 22:28 "But you are those who have
continued with Me in My trials.
Luk 22:29 And I bestow upon you a kingdom,
just as My Father bestowed one
upon Me,
Luk 22:30 that you may eat and drink at My
table in My kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the
twelve tribes of Israel."
Luk 22:31 And the Lord
said, "Simon,
Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may
sift you
as wheat.
Luk 22:32 But I have prayed for you, that
your faith should not fail; and when you have
returned to Me,
strengthen your brethren."
Luk 22:33 But he said
to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to
prison and to death."
Christ told Peter
how he was going to deny Christ.
Luk 22:34 Then He
said, "I
tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day
before you will deny three times that you know Me."
Luk 22:35 And He said
to them, "When
I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals,
did you lack anything?" So they said, "Nothing."
Luk 22:36 Then He said
to them, "But
now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and
likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let
him sell his garment and buy one.
Luk 22:37 For I say to you that this which
is written must still be accomplished in Me: 'AND HE
WAS NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS.' For the things
concerning Me have an end."
Luk 22:38 So they
said, "Lord, look, here are two
swords." And He said to them, "It
is enough."
After the piece of
bread Satan entered into Judas.
Joh 13:27 Now after
the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said
to him, "What you do, do quickly."
Joh 13:28 But no one
at the table knew for what reason He said this to him.
Joh 13:29 For some
thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus
had said to him, "Buy those things
we need for the feast," or that he should give
something to the poor.
Joh 13:30 Having
received the piece of bread, he then went out
immediately. And it was night.
Joh 13:31 So, when he
had gone out, Jesus said, "Now
the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in
Him.
Joh 13:32 If God is glorified in Him, God
will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him
immediately.
Joh 13:33 Little children, I shall be with
you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as
I said to the Jews, 'Where I am going, you cannot
come,' so now I say to you.
Joh 13:34 A new commandment I give to you,
that you love one another; as I have loved you, that
you also love one another.
Joh 13:35 By this all will know that you are
My disciples, if you have love for one another."
Joh 13:36 Simon Peter
said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus
answered him, "Where
I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall
follow Me afterward."
Christ talked to
them.
Joh 14:1 "Let not your heart
be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.
Joh 14:2 In My Father's house are many
mansions; if it were
not so,
I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for
you.
Joh 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place
for you, I will come again and receive you to
Myself; that where I am, there
you may be also.
Joh 14:4 And where I go you know, and the
way you know."
Thomas asked a
question.
Joh 14:5 Thomas said
to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and
how can we know the way?"
Joh 14:6 Jesus said
to him, "I
am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to
the Father except through Me.
Joh 14:7 "If you had known Me, you would
have known My Father also; and from now on you know
Him and have seen Him."
Phillip wanted to
see the Father.
Joh 14:8 Philip said
to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is
sufficient for us."
Joh 14:9 Jesus said
to him, "Have
I been with you so long, and yet you have not known
Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father;
so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
Joh 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in
the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I
speak to you I do not speak on My own authority;
but the Father who dwells in Me does the works.
Joh 14:11 Believe Me that I am in
the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me
for the sake of the works themselves.
Joh 14:12 "Most assuredly, I say to you, he
who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do
also; and greater works
than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
Joh 14:13 And whatever you ask in My name,
that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in
the Son.
Joh 14:14 If you ask anything in My name, I
will do it.
Joh 14:15 "If you love Me,
keep My commandments.
Joh 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and He
will give you another Helper, that He may abide with
you forever
Joh 14:17 the Spirit of
truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it
neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for
He dwells with you and will be in you.
Joh 14:18 I will not leave you orphans; I
will come to you.
Joh 14:19 "A little while longer and the
world will see Me no more, but you will see Me.
Because I live, you will live also.
Joh 14:20 At that day you will know that I am in My
Father, and you in Me, and I in you.
Joh 14:21 He who has My commandments and
keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves
Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him
and manifest Myself to him."
Judas {not
Iscariot} asked a question.
Joh 14:22 Judas (not
Iscariot) said to Him, "Lord, how is it that You will
manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?"
Joh 14:23 Jesus
answered and said to him, "If
anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father
will love him, and We will come to him and make Our
home with him.
Joh 14:24 He who does not love Me does not
keep My words; and the word which you hear is not
Mine but the Father's who sent Me.
Joh 14:25 "These things I have spoken to you
while being present with you.
Joh 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach
you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
things that I said to you.
Joh 14:27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I
give to you; not as the world gives do I give to
you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it
be afraid.
Joh 14:28 You have heard Me say to you, 'I
am going away and coming back to
you.' If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I
said, 'I am going to the Father,' for My Father is
greater than I.
Joh 14:29 "And now I have told you before it
comes, that when it does come to pass, you may
believe.
Joh 14:30 I will no longer talk much with
you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he
has nothing in Me.
Christ and the
disciples leave.
Joh 14:31 But that the world may know that I
love the Father, and as the Father gave Me
commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.
POSSIBLY ABOUT
10 PM.
Before they
departed they sung a hymn.
Mat 26:30
And when they had sung an hymn, they went out into the
mount of Olives.
As Christ and the
disciples travelled to the Mount
of Olives, Christ spoke to them.
Joh 15:1 "I am the true vine, and My Father
is the vinedresser.
Joh 15:2 Every branch in Me that does not
bear fruit He takes away; and every branch
that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more
fruit.
Joh 15:3 You are already clean because of
the word which I have spoken to you.
Joh 15:4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the
branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides
in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in
Me.
Joh 15:5 "I am the vine, you are the
branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears
much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
Joh 15:6 If anyone does not
abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is
withered; and they gather them and throw them into
the fire, and they are burned.
Joh 15:7 If you abide in Me, and My words
abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it
shall be done for you.
Joh 15:8 By this My Father is glorified,
that you bear much fruit; so you will be My
disciples.
Joh 15:9 "As the Father loved Me, I also
have loved you; abide in My love.
Joh 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you
will abide in My love, just as I have kept My
Father's commandments and abide in His love.
Joh 15:11 "These things I have spoken to
you, that My joy may remain in you, and that
your joy may be full.
Joh 15:12 This is My commandment, that you
love one another as I have loved you.
Joh 15:13 Greater love has no one than this,
than to lay down one's life for his friends.
Joh 15:14 You are My friends if you do
whatever I command you.
Joh 15:15 No longer do I call you servants,
for a servant does not know what his master is
doing; but I have called you friends, for all things
that I heard from My Father I have made known to
you.
Joh 15:16 You did not choose Me, but I chose
you and appointed you that you should go and bear
fruit, and that
your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the
Father in My name He may give you.
Joh 15:17 These things I command you, that
you love one another.
Joh 15:18 "If the world hates you, you know
that it hated Me before it hated
you.
Joh 15:19 If you were of the world, the
world would love its own. Yet because you are not of
the world, but I chose you out of the world,
therefore the world hates you.
Joh 15:20 Remember the word that I said to
you, 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If
they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If
they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
Joh 15:21 But all these things they will do
to you for My name's sake, because they do not know
Him who sent Me.
Joh 15:22 If I had not come and spoken to
them, they would have no sin, but now they have no
excuse for their sin.
Joh 15:23 He who hates Me hates My Father
also.
Joh 15:24 If I had not done among them the
works which no one else did, they would have no sin;
but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My
Father.
Joh 15:25 But this happened
that the word might be fulfilled which is written in
their law, 'THEY HATED ME WITHOUT A CAUSE.'
Joh 15:26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I
shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of
truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify
of Me.
Joh 15:27 And you also will
bear witness, because you have been with Me from the
beginning.
Joh 16:1 "These things I have spoken to
you, that you should not be made to stumble.
Joh 16:2 They will put you
out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that
whoever kills you will think that he offers God
service.
Joh 16:3 And these things they will do to
you because they have not known the Father nor Me.
Joh 16:4 But these things I have told you,
that when the time comes, you may remember that I
told you of them. "And these things I did not say to
you at the beginning, because I was with you.
Joh 16:5 "But now I go away
to Him who sent Me, and none of you asks Me, 'Where
are You going?'
Joh 16:6 But because I have said these
things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth.
It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do
not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if
I depart, I will send Him to you.
Joh 16:8 And when He has come, He will
convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and
of judgment:
Joh 16:9 of sin, because they do not
believe in Me;
Joh 16:10 of righteousness, because I go to
My Father and you see Me no more;
Joh 16:11 of judgment, because the ruler of
this world is judged.
Joh 16:12 "I still have many things to say
to you, but you cannot bear them
now.
Joh 16:13 However, when He, the Spirit of
truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth;
for He will not speak on His own authority,
but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will
tell you things to come.
Joh 16:14 He will glorify Me, for He will
take of what is Mine and declare it to
you.
Joh 16:15 All things that the Father has are
Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and
declare it
to you.
Joh 16:16 "A little while, and you will not
see Me; and again a little while, and you will see
Me, because I go to the Father."
The disciples
talked amongst themselves, and said, what is He saying?
Joh 16:19 Now Jesus
knew that they desired to ask Him, and He said to
them, "Are
you inquiring among yourselves about what I said, 'A
little while, and you will not see Me; and again a
little while, and you will see Me'?
Joh 16:20 Most assuredly, I say to you that
you will weep and lament, but the world will
rejoice; and you will be sorrowful, but your sorrow
will be turned into joy.
Joh 16:21 A woman, when she
is in labor, has sorrow because her hour has come; but
as soon as she has given birth to the child, she no
longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human
being has been born into the world.
Joh 16:22 Therefore you now have sorrow; but
I will see you again and your heart will rejoice,
and your joy no one will take from you.
Joh 16:23 "And in that day you will ask Me
nothing. Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you
ask the Father in My name He will give you.
Joh 16:24 Until now you have asked nothing
in My name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy
may be full.
Joh 16:25 "These things I
have spoken to you in figurative language; but the
time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in
figurative language, but I will tell you plainly about
the Father.
Joh 16:26 In that day you will ask in My
name, and I do not say to you that I shall pray the
Father for you;
Joh 16:27 for the Father Himself loves you,
because you have loved Me, and have believed that I
came forth from God.
Joh 16:28 I came forth from the Father and
have come into the world. Again, I leave the world
and go to the Father."
Joh 16:29 His
disciples said to Him, "See, now You are speaking
plainly, and using no figure of speech!
Joh 16:30 Now we are
sure that You know all things, and have no need that
anyone should question You. By this we believe that
You came forth from God."
Joh 16:31 Jesus
answered them, "Do
you now believe?
Joh 16:32 Indeed the hour is coming, yes,
has now come, that you will be scattered, each to
his own, and will leave Me alone. And yet I am not
alone, because the Father is with Me.
Joh 16:33 These things I have
spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the
world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer,
I have overcome the world."
Christ prayed.
Joh 17:1 Jesus spoke
these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: "Father,
the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son
also may glorify You,
Joh 17:2 as You have given Him authority
over all flesh, that He should give eternal life to
as many as You have given Him.
Joh 17:3 And this is eternal life, that
they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus
Christ whom You have sent.
Joh 17:4 I have glorified You on the earth.
I have finished the work which You have given Me to
do.
Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify Me
together with Yourself, with the glory which I had
with You before the world was.
Joh 17:6 "I have manifested Your name to
the men whom You have given Me out of the world.
They were Yours, You gave them to Me, and they have
kept Your word.
Joh 17:7 Now they have known that all
things which You have given Me are from You.
Joh 17:8 For I have given to them the words
which You have given Me; and they have received them,
and have known surely that I came forth from You;
and they have believed that You sent Me.
Joh 17:9 "I pray for them. I do not pray
for the world but for those whom You have given Me,
for they are Yours.
Joh 17:10 And all Mine are Yours, and Yours
are Mine, and I am glorified in them.
Joh 17:11 Now I am no longer in the world,
but these are in the world, and I come to You. Holy
Father, keep through Your name those whom You have
given Me, that they may be one as We are.
Joh 17:12 While I was with them in the
world, I kept them in Your name. Those whom You gave
Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the
son of perdition, that the Scripture might be
fulfilled.
Joh 17:13 But now I come to You, and these
things I speak in the world, that they may have My
joy fulfilled in themselves.
Joh 17:14 I have given them Your word; and
the world has hated them because they are not of the
world, just as I am not of the world.
Joh 17:15 I do not pray that You should take
them out of the world, but that You should keep them
from the evil one.
Joh 17:16 They are not of the world, just as
I am not of the world.
Joh 17:17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your
word is truth.
Joh 17:18 As You sent Me into the world, I
also have sent them into the world.
Joh 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify
Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the
truth.
Joh 17:20 "I do not pray for these alone,
but also for those who will believe in Me through
their word;
Joh 17:21 that they all may
be one, as You, Father, are in Me,
and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that
the world may believe that You sent Me.
Joh 17:22 And the glory which You gave Me I
have given them, that they may be one just as We are
one:
Joh 17:23 I in them, and You in Me; that
they may be made perfect in one, and that the world
may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them
as You have loved Me.
Joh 17:24 "Father, I desire that they also
whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that
they may behold My glory which You have given Me;
for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.
Joh 17:25 O righteous Father! The world has
not known You, but I have known You; and these have
known that You sent Me.
Joh 17:26 And I have declared to them Your
name, and will declare it,
that the love with which You loved Me may be in
them, and I in them."
When they arrived
at the Mount of Olives
and Gethsemane Christ went to pray and asked the
disciples to do the same.
POSSIBLY AROUND
11 PM.
The reason Christ
told them to pray could well have been to strengthen
themselves for the next few hours ahead, remember Peter
denied Christ, and there was much opposition against
Christ from the Pharisees and the Sadducees, which put a
lot of pressure on the followers of Christ. The
death of Christ itself would be a huge test of faith for
them also.
Luk 22:40 When He came
to the place, He said to them, "Pray
that you may not enter into temptation."
Luk 22:41 And He was
withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He
knelt down and prayed,
Christ took with
Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, He needed the
comfort and support of the disciples, He needed them to
pray for Him.
Mat 26:37 And He took
with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He
began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.
Mat 26:38 Then He said
to them, "My
soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay
here and watch with Me."
Mat 26:39 He went a
little farther and fell on His face, and prayed,
saying, "O
My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from
Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will."
While Jesus prayed
an angel strengthened Him.
Luk 22:43 Then an
angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him.
He was in such
agony His sweat turned to blood.
Luk 22:44 And being in
agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became
like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, "Simon,
are you sleeping? Could you not watch one hour?
Mar 14:38 Watch and pray, lest you enter

willing, but the flesh is
weak."
Mar 14:39 Again He

you still sleeping and resting? It is enough! The
hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being
betrayed into the hands of sinners.
Mar 14:42 Rise, let us be going. See, My
betrayer is at hand."
Notice how Iscariot
went to kiss Him, but he did not.
Luk 22:47 And while He
was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who
was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them
and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him.
Luk 22:48 But Jesus
said to him, "Judas,
are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
NOW FOR NEW
KNOWLEDGE ON THE BETRAYAL OF CHRIST.
Not only did Judas
Iscariot betray Christ, but so did Christ’s brother
Judas.
The following is
referring to Christ’s brother Judas.
Judas arrived
with the detachment of troops and officers from the
chief priests and Pharisees.
Joh 18:1 When Jesus
had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples
over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which
He and His disciples entered.
The following verse
refers to Christ’s brother, because Iscariot was a
disciple, this verse could not refer to him.
Joh 18:2 And Judas,
who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often
met there with His disciples.
Joh 18:3 Then Judas,
having received a detachment of troops,
and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees,
came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
Christ was not
expecting His brother. Iscariot
and his multitude were already there, and Christ thought
this second group may have been after the disciples. He
did not think they had come to get Him because the first
group were there.
Christ’s brother
told his detachment that he would kiss Christ and he did
that as soon as the detachment arrived.
Mat 26:48 Now His
betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I
kiss, He is the One; seize Him."
Mat 26:49 Immediately
he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and
kissed Him.
Jesus asked His
brother why he was there.
In the following
verse, the word then, does not mean immediately, there
could have been a gap of some minutes before He was
led away.
Mat 26:50 But Jesus
said to him, "Friend,
why have you come?" Then they came and laid hands on
Jesus and took Him.
Jesus questioned
the group to find out why they were there.
Christ knew that
Iscariot and his group were already there to take Him,
and so He was unaware of His brother’s intentions to
betray Him and arrest Him with his detachment.
Jesus received no
answer from His brother and so addressed the detachment
of officers.
Joh 18:4 Jesus
therefore, knowing all things that would come upon
Him, went forward and said to them, "Whom
are you seeking?"
Joh 18:5 They
answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus
said to them, "I am He."
And Judas, who betrayed Him,
also stood with them.
They would have
fallen backward because Christ said He was God {I am}
and they did not believe this.
Joh 18:6 Now when He
said to them, "I am He," they drew back
and fell to the ground.
Joh 18:7 Then He
asked them again, "Whom are you
seeking?" And
they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."
Jesus was worried
they had come for the disciples.
Joh 18:8 Jesus
answered, "I have told you
that I am He.
Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,"
Joh 18:9 that the
saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, "Of
those whom You gave Me I have lost none."
After Jesus spoke
these words then comes the remainder of verse 50 as
stated above this may have only been a few minutes after
Christ’s brother had kissed Him.
Mat
26:50.......... Then they came
and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
Now whilst Christ
was being led away, Peter draws his sword.
Joh 18:10 Then Simon
Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high
priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The
servant's name was Malchus.
Mat 26:52 But Jesus
said to him, "Put
your sword in its place, for all who take the sword
will perish by the sword.
Mat 26:53 Or do you think that I cannot now
pray to My Father, and He will provide Me with more
than twelve legions of angels?
Mat 26:54 How then could the Scriptures be
fulfilled, that it must happen thus?"
Notice that when
Christ healed the ear of the servant Malchus,
that He was not bound at this point, He had hands laid
on Him, but not bound, because He could not touch the
ear if He was bound.
Luk 22:50 And one of
them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off
his right ear.
Luk 22:51 But Jesus
answered and said, "Permit even this." And
He touched his ear and healed him.
Luk 22:52 Then Jesus
said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and
the elders who had come to Him, "Have
you come out, as against a robber, with swords and
clubs?
Luk 22:53 When I was with you daily in the
temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is
your hour, and the power of darkness."
Luk 22:54 Having
arrested Him, they led Him and
brought Him into the high priest's house. But Peter
followed at a distance.
Christ spoke these
words within 1 hour of His original arrest.
Mat 26:55 In that hour
Jesus said to the multitudes, "Have
you come out, as against a robber, with swords and
clubs to take Me? I sat daily with you, teaching in
the temple, and you did not seize Me.
Christ was bound,
by the detachment who had come with Judas the brother of
Christ, and taken to Annas.
POSSIBLY AROUND 3 AM.
CHRIST WAS TAKEN
BEFORE ANNAS FIRST.
Joh 18:12 Then the
detachment of
troops and the captain and the officers of
the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.
Joh 18:13 And they led
Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law
of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.
Annas was also a
high priest.
Luk 3:2 while Annas
and Caiaphas were high priests, the word of God came
to John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness.
Joh 18:14 Now it was
Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient
that one man should die for the people.
One disciple,
probably Judas, the brother of Christ, also followed
with Peter, but the other disciples fled. Judas the
brother of Christ, was concerned about what was going to
happen to Christ. He
only wanted Him taken away safely, not harmed in any
way.
Joh 18:15 And Simon
Peter followed Jesus, and so did
another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the
high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of
the high priest.
Mar 14:50 Then they
all forsook Him and fled.
The following
scripture shows that the disciple was known to the high
priest, this further suggests that it was Judas,
Christ’s brother, as he had negotiated with them for
thirty pieces of silver.
Joh 18:15 And Simon
Peter followed Jesus, and so did
another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the
high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of
the high priest.
Judas arranged for
Peter to come in. It
is interesting how they only questioned Peter about
knowing Christ. If
the other disciple, who was with Peter, was John, then
surely they would have known he was with Christ too. However, it
was only Peter they accused, so this is also another
proof that it is highly probable that the other disciple
was in fact Judas, the brother of Christ. Bear in mind a
disciple is a student, and is not necessarily one of the
twelve.
Joh 18:16 But Peter
stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple,
who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke
to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.
Joh 18:17 Then the
servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are
not also one
of this Man's disciples, are you?" He said, "I am
not."
Joh 18:18 Now the
servants and officers who had made a fire of coals
stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed
themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed
himself.
Christ was before
Annas for at least one hour.
Luk 22:58 And after a
little while another saw him and said, "You also are
of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!"
Luk 22:59 Then after
about an hour had passed, another confidently
affirmed, saying, "Surely this fellow
also was with Him, for he is a Galilean."
Joh 18:19 The high
priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His
doctrine.
Joh 18:20 Jesus
answered him, "I
spoke openly to the world. I always taught in
synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always
meet, and in secret I have said nothing.
Joh 18:21 Why do you ask Me?
Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them.
Indeed they know what I said."
Joh 18:22 And when He
had said these things, one of the officers who stood
by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do
You answer the high priest like that?"
Joh 18:23 Jesus
answered him, "If
I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if
well, why do you strike Me?"

THE FOLLOWING
IS CHRIST’S TRIAL BEFORE CAIAPHAS.
Joh 18:24 Then Annas
sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
Mat 26:57 And those
who had laid hold of Jesus led Him away
to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the
elders were assembled.
The council sought
for witnesses against Christ. But found none.
Mar 14:55 Now the
chief priests and all the council sought testimony
against Jesus to put Him to death, but found none.
Mar 14:58 "We heard
Him say, 'I will destroy this temple made with hands,
and within three days I will build another made
without hands.' "
Mar 14:60 And the high
priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, saying,
"Do You answer nothing? What is it
these men testify against You?"
Mar 14:61 But He kept
silent and answered nothing. Again the high priest
asked Him, saying to Him, "Are You the Christ, the Son
of the Blessed?"
Mar 14:62 Jesus said, "I
am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the
right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds
of heaven."
Mar 14:65 Then some
began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to
beat Him, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!" And the
officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Peter denies
Christ.
Mat 26:73 And a little
later those who stood by came up and said to Peter,
"Surely you also are one of
them, for your speech betrays you."
Peter had cut off
the ear of a relative of the high priest Annas.
The hour is probably around 5 am as the cock crows
before sun up.
Joh 18:26 One of the
servants of the high priest, a relative of him
whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in
the garden with Him?"
Mat 26:74 Then he
began to curse and swear, saying, "I
do not know the Man!" Immediately a rooster crowed.
Mat 26:75 And Peter
remembered the word of Jesus who had said to him, "Before
the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times."
So he went out and wept
bitterly.
Before Jesus went
to the council, He is subjected to questioning and
abuse.
Luk 22:63 Now the men
who held Jesus mocked Him and beat Him.
Luk 22:64 And having
blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked
Him, saying, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck
You?"
Luk 22:65 And many
other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.
Now it was early
morning before Christ went to the council.

Luk 22:66 As soon as
it was day, the elders of the people, both chief

Luk 22:67 "If You are
the Christ, tell us." But He said to them, "If
I tell you, you will by no means believe.
Luk 22:68 And if I also ask you, you
will by no means answer Me or let Me go.
Luk 22:69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit
on the right hand of the power of God."
Luk 22:70 Then they
all said, "Are You then the Son of God?" So He said to
them, "You rightly
say that I am."
Luk 22:71 And they
said, "What further testimony do we need? For we have
heard it ourselves from His own mouth."
Luk 23:1 Then the
whole multitude of them arose and led Him to Pilate.

IN THE MORNING
JESUS WAS TAKEN TO THE HALL CALLED PRAETORIUM TO
APPEAR BEFORE PILATE.
Mar 15:16 Then the
soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium,
and they called together the whole garrison.
Joh 18:28 Then they
led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was
early morning. But they themselves did not go into the
Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they
might eat the Passover.
The following is
about the brother of Christ, Judas. This is further
proof of Judas being with Peter. He witnessed
what had happened to Christ, and realised they were
going to kill Him. He knew he had betrayed an innocent
man, so he returned the 30 pieces of silver, and hung
himself.
Mat 27:3 Then Judas,
His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was
remorseful and brought back the thirty pieces of
silver to the chief priests and elders,
Mat 27:4 saying, "I
have sinned by betraying innocent blood." And they
said, "What is
that to us? You see to it!"
Mat 27:5 Then he
threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and
departed, and went and hanged himself.
When the money was
returned by Judas the brother of Christ, the chief
priests went and bought a field called the Potter’s
field with it.
Mat 27:6 But the
chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is
not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they
are the price of blood."
Mat 27:7 And they
consulted together and bought with them the potter's
field, to bury strangers in.
Mat 27:8 Therefore
that field has been called the Field of Blood to this
day.
Mat 27:9 Then was
fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet,
saying, "AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER,
THE VALUE OF HIM WHO WAS PRICED, whom they of the
children of Israel
priced,
Mat 27:10 AND GAVE
THEM FOR THE POTTER'S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME."
Now let’s look at
Judas Iscariot.
The disciple of
Jesus, Judas Iscariot, bought a field called Aceldama with the money and then
fell off a cliff.
Act 1:17 for he was
numbered with us and obtained a part in this
ministry."
Act 1:18 (Now this
man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and
falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all
his entrails gushed out.
Act 1:19 And it
became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so
that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama,
that is, Field of Blood.)
Back to Christ
before Pilate.
Luk 23:2 And they
began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this fellow
perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to
Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."
Notice that Christ
did not answer.
Mat 27:12 And while He
was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He
answered nothing.
Mat 27:13 Then Pilate
said to Him, "Do You not hear how many things they
testify against You?"
Mat 27:14 But He
answered him not one word, so that the governor
marveled greatly.
Luk 23:3 Then Pilate
asked Him, saying, "Are You the King of the Jews?" He
answered him and said, "It is as
you say."
After Pilate has
questioned Jesus he then addressed the crowd.
Luk 23:4 So Pilate
said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find no
fault in this Man."
Luk 23:5 But they
were the more fierce, saying, "He stirs up the people,
teaching throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee to this place."
Luk 23:6 When Pilate
heard of Galilee, he asked if the Man were a Galilean.
Luk 23:7 And as soon
as he knew that He belonged to Herod's jurisdiction,
he sent Him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem
at that time.

and he hoped to see some miracle done by Him.
Luk 23:9 Then he
questioned Him with many words, but He answered him
nothing.
Luk 23:10 And the
chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused
Him.
JESUS DID NOT
ANSWER HEROD AND HEROD PUT A ROBE ON HIM.

JESUS SENT BACK TO PILATE.
Luk 23:12 That very
day Pilate and Herod became friends with each other,
for previously they had been at enmity with each
other.
Luk 23:13 Then Pilate,
when he had called together the chief priests, the
rulers, and the people,
PILATE ADDRESSED
THE PEOPLE FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Luk 23:14 said to
them, "You have brought this Man to me, as one who
misleads the people. And indeed, having examined Him in
your presence, I have found no fault in this Man
concerning those things of which you accuse Him;
Luk 23:15 no, neither
did Herod, for I sent you back to him; and indeed
nothing deserving of death has been done by Him.
PILATE QUESTIONED
JESUS.
Joh 18:33 Then Pilate
entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said
to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"
Joh 18:34 Jesus
answered him, "Are
you speaking for yourself about this, or did others
tell you this concerning Me?"
Joh 18:35 Pilate
answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief
priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?"
Joh 18:36 Jesus
answered, "My
kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of
this world, My servants would fight, so that I
should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My
kingdom is not from here."
Joh 18:37 Pilate
therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus
answered, "You say rightly
that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for
this cause I have come into the world, that I should
bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the
truth hears My voice."
Joh 18:38 Pilate said
to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he
went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find
no fault in Him at all.
Notice how Paul stated that Pilate really wanted
Christ to be freed.
Act 3:13 The God of
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers,
glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and
denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was
determined to let Him go.
Act 3:14 But you
denied the Holy One and the Just, and asked for a
murderer to be granted to you,
Pilate did not
want Jesus to die.
PILATE ADDRESSED THE PEOPLE FOR THE SECOND TIME.
Luk 23:16 I will
therefore chastise Him and release Him"
Luk 23:17 (for it was
necessary for him to release one to them at the
feast).
Luk 23:18 And they all
cried out at once, saying, "Away with this Man, and
release to us Barabbas"
Luk 23:19 who had been
thrown into prison for a certain rebellion made in the
city, and for murder.
AGAIN PILATE ADDRESSED THE CROWD TRYING TO FREE
JESUS FOR THE THIRD TIME.
Luk 23:20 Pilate,
therefore, wishing to release Jesus, again called out
to them.
Luk 23:21 But they
shouted, saying, "Crucify Him,
crucify Him!"
Luk 23:22 Then he said
to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I
have found no reason for death in Him. I will
therefore chastise Him and let Him go."
Luk 23:23 But they
were insistent, demanding with loud voices that He be
crucified. And the voices of these men and of the
chief priests prevailed.
Jesus sentenced
by Pilate.
Luk 23:24 So Pilate
gave sentence that it should be as they requested.
Luk 23:25 And he
released to them the one they requested, who for
rebellion and murder had been thrown into prison; but
he delivered Jesus to their will.
Mat 27:24 When Pilate
saw that he could not prevail at all, but rather that a
tumult was rising, he took water and washed his hands
before the multitude, saying, "I am innocent of the
blood of this just Person. You see to it."
Mat 27:25 And all the
people answered and said, "His blood be on us
and on our children."
Jesus was savagely
beaten by the Roman soldiers, His ribs were all visible
and He was so badly beaten you could not recognise
Him.
Mat 27:26 Then he
released Barabbas to them; and when he had scourged
Jesus, he delivered Him to be crucified.
Jesus humiliated
before being taken away.
Mar 15:16 Then the
soldiers led Him away into the hall called Praetorium,
and they called together the whole garrison.
Mar 15:17 And they
clothed Him with purple; and they twisted a crown of
thorns, put it on His head,
Mat 27:29 When they
had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His
head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the
knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of
the Jews!"
Mat 27:30 Then they
spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the
head.
Mat 27:31 And when
they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put
His own
clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
Notice here that
Simon of Cyrene carried the cross on the
way to Christ's first crucifixion.
Mat 27:32 Now as they
came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by
name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.
Luk 23:27 And a great
multitude of the people followed Him, and women who
also mourned and lamented Him.
Luk 23:28 But Jesus,
turning to them, said, "Daughters
of Jerusalem,
do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for
your children.
Luk 23:29 For indeed the days are coming in
which they will say, 'Blessed are the
barren, wombs that never bore, and breasts which
never nursed!'
Luk 23:30 Then they will begin 'TO SAY TO
THE MOUNTAINS, "FALL ON US!" AND TO THE HILLS,
"COVER US!" '
Luk 23:31 For if they do
these things in the green wood, what will be done in
the dry?"
Luk 23:32 There were
also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to
death.
Mar 15:22 And they
brought Him to the place Golgotha, which is
translated, Place of a Skull.
Mar 15:23 Then they
gave Him wine mingled with myrrh to drink, but He did
not take it.
Mar 15:24 And when
they crucified Him, they divided His garments, casting
lots for them to determine what every man should take.

Mar 15:25 Now it was
the third hour, and they crucified Him.
Mar 15:26 And the
inscription of His accusation was written above: THE
KING OF THE JEWS.
Mar 15:27 With Him
they also crucified two robbers, one on His right and
the other on His left.
Mar 15:28 So the
Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND HE WAS
NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS."
Luk 23:34 Then Jesus
said, "Father,
forgive them, for they do not know what they do."
And they divided His
garments and cast lots.
Luk 23:35 And the
people stood looking on. But even the rulers with them
sneered, saying, "He saved others; let Him save
Himself if He is the Christ, the chosen of God."
Luk 23:36 The soldiers
also mocked Him, coming and offering Him sour wine,
Luk 23:37 and saying,
"If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself."
Luk 23:38 And an
inscription also was written over Him in letters of
Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE
JEWS.
Matthew Mark and Luke all differ in what they say
was written over Christ, that is because if you notice
it is written in Greek, Latin and Hebrew.
Therefore each disciple would have translated from a
different language.
The account in
John is what Pilate wrote.
NOW FOR SOME NEW KNOWLEDGE
At this point sometime between the third hour {9
am} and the sixth hour {12 noon} Christ was taken off
the cross and taken again to Pilate.
CHRIST AT THE SECOND CRUCIFIXION. POSSIBLY 10
AM.
Pilate brought out Jesus yet again before the
people and said again that He was innocent.
Joh 19:4 Pilate then
went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am
bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find
no fault in Him."
At the first
crucifixion Christ wore His own clothes.
Mat 27:31 And when
they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put
His own
clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.
Joh 19:5 Then Jesus
came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple
robe. And Pilate
said to them, "Behold the Man!"
Joh 19:6 Therefore,
when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they
cried out, saying, "Crucify Him,
crucify Him!"
Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him, for I
find no fault in Him."
Joh 19:7 The Jews
answered him, "We have a law, and according to our law
He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of
God."
Joh 19:8 Therefore,
when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid,
Joh 19:9 and went
again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, "Where
are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.
Joh 19:10 Then Pilate
said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not
know that I have power to crucify You, and power to
release You?"
Joh 19:11 Jesus
answered, "You
could have no power at all against Me unless it had
been given you from above. Therefore the one who
delivered Me to you has the greater sin."
Joh 19:12 From then on
Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out,
saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's
friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against
Caesar."
NOTICE THAT
CHRIST WAS NOW JUDGED IN THE PLACE CALLED THE PAVEMENT
OR GABBATHA. CHRIST HAD NOT
BEEN IN THIS PLACE BEFORE THIS TIME.
Joh 19:13 When Pilate
therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and
sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is
called The
Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Joh 19:15 But they
cried out, "Away with Him, away
with Him!
Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify
your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no
king but Caesar!"
Remember Pilate had already been warned strongly
by his wife about Jesus, now these words Christ spoke
troubled Pilate. Also remember Pilate could find
no fault in Jesus.
Jesus had not been taken to the Pavement or
Gabbatha before this account.
He had
previously been taken to the Praetorium and the
Judgment Hall.
Read this following verse again which shows that
Christ was taken off the cross and brought to a new area
called the Pavement or Gabbatha.
Joh 19:13 When Pilate
therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and
sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is
called The
Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.
Isaiah prophesied about His imprisonment.
Isa 53:8 He was taken
from prison and from judgment, And who will declare
His generation? For He was cut off from the land of
the living; For the transgressions of My people He was
stricken.
Christ had already been crucified, and now had
been brought back before Pilate a second time, because
Pilate wanted to release Him.
Pilate tried very hard to release Him. The
time between when Christ was taken down from the cross
and sent back to be put on the cross would have been
approx. 2 hours. During this time period Pilate tried
very hard to free Him.
Joh 19:12 From then on
Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out,
saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's
friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against
Caesar."
Act 3:13 The God of
Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers,
glorified His Servant Jesus, whom you delivered up and
denied in the presence of Pilate, when he was
determined to let Him go.
NOW LOOK AT WHAT TIME IT WAS …..ABOUT THE SIXTH
HOUR NOW THE TIME IS 12 MIDDAY
Pilate did not want to kill Christ, but the chief
priests wanted it.
Joh 19:14 Now it was
the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the
sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your
King!"
Joh 19:15 But they
cried out, "Away with Him, away
with Him!
Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify
your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no
king but Caesar!"
Joh 19:16 Then he
delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took
Jesus and led Him away.
There are two different times stated in scripture
for the crucifixion. The third hour, {9am} which
was the first time He was put on the cross.
And the sixth
hour {12 noon} which was the second time He was put on
the cross after Pilate had tried to free Him.
The first time Christ went to be crucified Simon
carried the cross.
Mat 27:32 Now as they
came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by
name. Him they compelled to bear His cross.
NOTICE CHRIST
CARRIED HIS OWN CROSS THE SECOND TIME.
Joh 19:17 And He,
bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place
of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,
Notice how Christ
instructed the rich man to carry his own cross. In
the same way, Christ had to carry His own cross.
Mar 10:21 Then Jesus,
looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One
thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have
and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in
heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me."
Joh 19:18 where they
crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either
side, and Jesus in the center.
Now, let’s notice carefully that in two accounts
the people who were crucified with Jesus derided Him.
The men were robbers or criminals, who were
crucified with Christ the first time. And both reviled
Him.
Mat 27:44 Even the
robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with
the same thing.
Mar 15:32 Let the
Christ, the King of Israel, descend now from the
cross, that we may see and believe." Even those who
were crucified with Him reviled Him.
However in Luke, notice the criminals, one knows
who Jesus is. One of the criminals said Christ was
innocent and asked to be in the kingdom with Christ.
NOTICE ALSO THAT THE CRIMINALS WERE LED WITH
CHRIST.
Luk 23:32 There were
also two others, criminals, led with Him to be put to
death.
Luk 23:33 And when
they had come to the place called Calvary, there they
crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right
hand and the other on the left.
Luk 23:40 But the
other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not
even fear God, seeing you are under the same
condemnation?
Luk 23:41 And we
indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our
deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong."
Luk 23:42 Then he said
to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your
kingdom."
Luk 23:43 And Jesus
said to him, "Assuredly,
I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."
Notice also that in
the second crucifixion Christ was taken to Calvary, in
the first crucifixion He was taken to Golgotha.
Pilate also made a
title. Notice
that there is no mention of Pilate being present at the
first crucifixion, however he was there at the second
crucifixion.
Joh 19:19 Now Pilate
wrote a title and put it on the
cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH,
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Joh 19:20 Then many of
the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus
was crucified was near the city; and it was written in
Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.
Joh 19:21 Therefore
the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not
write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am
the King of the Jews." ' "
Joh 19:22 Pilate
answered, "What I have written, I have written."
At this crucifixion the soldiers also divided
Christ’s clothes.
Joh 19:23 Then the
soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His
garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part,
and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam,
woven from the top in one piece.
Joh 19:24 They said
therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but
cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the
Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "THEY DIVIDED
MY GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST
LOTS." Therefore the soldiers did these things.
Joh 19:25 Now there
stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His
mother's sister, Mary the wife of
Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Joh 19:26 When Jesus
therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He
loved standing by, He said to His mother, "Woman,
behold your son!"
Joh 19:27 Then He said
to the disciple, "Behold
your mother!" And
from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.
Joh 19:28 After this,
Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished,
that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, "I
thirst!"
DARK FROM MIDDAY TILL 3PM.
Mat 27:45 Now from the
sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness
over all the land.
Mat 27:46 And about
the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice,
saying, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"
that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU
FORSAKEN ME?"
Mat 27:47 Some of
those who stood there, when they heard that,
said, "This Man is calling for Elijah!"
Joh 19:29 Now a vessel
full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a
sponge with sour wine, put it on
hyssop, and put it to His
mouth.
JESUS DIED AT ABOUT 3 PM.
Joh 19:30 So when
Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is
finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Joh 19:31 Therefore,
because it was the Preparation Day, that
the bodies should not remain on the cross on the
Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews
asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they
might be taken away.
Mat 27:51 Then,
behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from
top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks
were split,
Mat 27:52 and the
graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who
had fallen asleep were raised;
Mat 27:53 and coming
out of the graves after His resurrection, they went
into the holy city and appeared to many.
Joh 19:32 Then the
soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of
the other who was crucified with Him.
Joh 19:33 But when
they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead,
they did not break His legs.
Joh 19:34 But one of
the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and
immediately blood and water came out.
Joh 19:35 And he who
has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and
he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may
believe.
Joh 19:36 For these
things were done that the Scripture should be
fulfilled, "NOT ONE OF HIS BONES SHALL BE BROKEN."
Joh 19:37 And again
another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM
THEY PIERCED."
Joseph and
Nicodemus prepared the body of Jesus for burial.
Joh 19:38 After this,
Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but
secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he
might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him
permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
Joh 19:39 And
Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also
came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a
hundred pounds.
Joh 19:40 Then they
took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of
linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to
bury.
Joh 19:41 Now in the
place where He was crucified there was a garden, and
in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been
laid.
Joh 19:42 So there
they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, for
the tomb was nearby.
POSSIBLY AROUND 5 PM BEFORE SUNSET.
The women from Galilee who followed Him
prepared spices to anoint His body.
Luk 23:54 That day was
the Preparation, and the Sabbath drew near.
Luk 23:55 And the
women who had come with Him from Galilee followed
after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was
laid.
Luk 23:56 Then they
returned and prepared spices and fragrant oils. And
they rested on the Sabbath according to the
commandment.
