In the bible, there is a place called the abyss or the pit. Why was this place created and when did this occur?

Let’s notice a time when the planning of the earth was in progress.

The following scripture is when the earth was created and shows a planning of the earth.

Job 38:4  “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.

Job 38:5  Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?

Job 38:6  To what were its foundations fastened? Or who laid its cornerstone,

Job 38:7  When the morning stars sang together, And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

At this time the morning stars and the sons of God were very happy about this event. The spiritual realm were overjoyed about this tremendous creation. The earth was going to be their home.

Gen 1:1  In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

When the earth was created it was a home for the angels, the sons of God and one of the morning stars. This was millions of years ago.

The dinosaurs also inhabited the earth at this time, history tells us they died approximately 65 million years ago.

We know the dinosaurs were on the earth as long as 160 million years ago or longer, because their bones have been dated to this time. There is also evidence that at the time of the dinosaurs the earth had lush vegetation similar to a large rain forest we see today. This would have to be the case to feed the enormous herbivore types of dinosaurs.

It is not known if the spiritual realm inhabited the earth before the dinosaurs or at the same time.

Isa 45:18  For thus says the LORD, Who created the heavens, Who is God, Who formed the earth and made it, Who has established it, Who did not create it in vain, Who formed it to be inhabited: “I am the LORD, and there is no other.

Sometime after the spirit beings were put on earth, thoughts of power and rebellion entered the hearts and minds of Lucifer and the devil. The devil was a liar and a murderer from the beginning. Lucifer and the devil wanted to rule more than the earth, they wanted to dethrone God Almighty Himself. Notice the following scriptures.

Joh 8:44  You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

Luk 10:18  And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

More on the rebellion of Lucifer an evil son of God, a morning star. Notice he had a throne, so he had a position of authority amongst the spirit realm. He more than likely was in charge of all the spirit realm on earth. He wanted to exalt his throne above the stars of God, the stars of God are sons of God. He wanted to be like the Most High.

Isa 14:12  “How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!

Isa 14:13  For you have said in your heart: ‘I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;

Isa 14:14  I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’

Isa 14:15  Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.

We know there are many spirit beings, a great deal of them could have been involved in this rebellion.

Not all the sons of God and angels joined the alliance against God. Those who refused to join Lucifer’s rebellion were put in prison.

Isa 14:17  Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?' 

The rebellion of some of the spiritual realm, caused the earth to become without form and void. The dinosaurs were all killed at this time. The damage done to the solar system was enormous.

Gen 1:2  The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

2Pe 3:4  and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation.”

2Pe 3:5  For this they willfully forget: that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of water and in the water,

2Pe 3:6  by which the world that then existed perished, being flooded with water.

There could be a great amount of time between Genesis 1 verse 1 and Genesis 1 verse 2.

Genesis 1 verse 1 is when the earth was created and was a home for some of the spiritual realm and the dinosaurs.

God made the earth to be inhabited, therefore after the disaster of the rebellion, and the earth being rendered without form and void in Genesis 1 v 2 there had to be a renewal of the earth and the sun moon and stars had to be restored to their former glory.

Psa 104:30  You send forth Your Spirit, they are created; And You renew the face of the earth.

Here is a translation of some of the verses in Genesis using Strong’s Concordance, showing what the earth actually looked like after the sin of the devil and Lucifer and the rebellion of some of the spiritual realm.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was worthless and empty and wickedness was on the face of the abyss.

And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the wasting waters.

And God said Let there be happiness and there was happiness.

And God saw the happiness that it was cheerful. And God separated the happiness from the wickedness.

The earth was in a terrible state because of the sins of the devil and Lucifer. Together with the rebellion of some of the spiritual realm.

The light was definitely happiness that can be used as a spiritual aspect of the word light, and the darkness was definitely wickedness the other words for darkness used in the concordance, are misery, destruction, death, ignorance, and sorrow. It is clear that the word darkness was referring to the direct actions of the devil, Lucifer, and the rebellious spirit beings.

Gen 1:3  Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

Gen 1:4  And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.

When God divided the light from the darkness in the above verse, this may well have been the time that He created the Abyss, or Pit.

Before the rebellion there was no need for a place of restraint, all was going along well on the earth, but when the rebellion occurred, with possibly millions of spirit beings involved in the alliance, there became a need for a place of restraint for these sinning spirits.

When God returned the earth to a place which could be inhabited, He put original man on the earth.

Original man must have been on the earth thousands of years ago, the oldest human remains found are about 300 thousand years old. Original man differed from Adam. Original man was created with the Holy Spirit of power, which is eternal life inherent, he was made in the image of God. He was not made from dust.

Gen 1:26  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

Gen 1:27  So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

Sometime after they were created, original man rebelled against God, and became disobedient and degenerated which was caused by their continual love of sin.

Original man was destroyed in a flood.

Job 22:15  Will you keep to the old way Which wicked men have trod,

Job 22:16  Who were cut down before their time, Whose foundations were swept away by a flood?

Job 22:17  They said to God, ‘Depart from us! What can the Almighty do to them?’

Now we come to the abyss, where is it?

The reason it had to be created was the wickedness that filled the earth because of the sins of the devil and other spirit beings. There had to be a place of restraint.

We also need to ascertain who is in the pit or abyss.

The abyss or pit appears to have doors and bars and it would appear that it is in the deepest part of the ocean.

Psa 135:6  Whatever the LORD pleases He does, In heaven and in earth, In the seas and in all deep places.

Job 38:16  “Have you entered the springs of the sea? Or have you walked in search of the depths?

Job 38:17  Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Or have you seen the doors of the shadow of death?

Jon 2:6  I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God.

Isa 38:10  I said, “In the prime of my life I shall go to the gates of Sheol; I am deprived of the remainder of my years.”

Rom 10:7  or, “ ‘WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

Pro 7:27  Her house is the way to hell, Descending to the chambers of death.

2Pe 2:4  For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment;

Why did God make this place. As we know the devil was a murderer from the beginning. God found it necessary to create a place for these sinning angels and sons of God.

The question we need to ask is when was the abyss or pit created.

The following scripture shows that when the earth was created, the morning stars and the sons of God shouted for joy.

We now know that it was some time after the planning of the earth that the devil became a murderer and the rebellion of some of the spirit beings occurred. It then became necessary for the abyss or pitt to be created. This was a place of restraint for these sinning spirit beings.

Eze 26:20  then I will bring you down with those who descend into the Pit, to the people of old, and I will make you dwell in the lowest part of the earth, in places desolate from antiquity, with those who go down to the Pit, so that you may never be inhabited; and I shall establish glory in the land of the living.

Eze 28:8  They shall throw you down into the Pit, And you shall die the death of the slain In the midst of the seas.

The key to the bottomless pit is given to a star.

Rev  9:1  Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit.

To answer the questions at the beginning of the article, the abyss or pit, appears to have been created after the rebellion of Lucifer, the devil and some of the spiritual world.

Gen 1 v 4 shows that God divided the light from the darkness.

The abyss had to be created due to the rebellion of the spirit beings, there was of necessity a place of restraint.

Where is the Abyss? It would appear from the scriptures shown in this article that this prison for spirit beings is located in the deepest part of the ocean. It is secure and a star has the key to the bottomless pit.

Rev 9:1  Then the fifth angel sounded: And I saw a star fallen from heaven to the earth. To him was given the key to the bottomless pit. 

Rev 9:2  And he opened the bottomless pit, and smoke arose out of the pit like the smoke of a great furnace. So the sun and the air were darkened because of the smoke of the pit. 

Satan will be thrown into the bottomless pit.

Rev 20:1  Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. 

Rev 20:2  He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; 

Rev 20:3  and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.
