The following words are the numbers used in Strong’s Concordance.

HELL     G86

The New Testament mostly uses this word for hell or Hades in most cases. Meaning a place or grave.

HELL     G5020   {Tartarus}

Only mentioned once in the scriptures, a place of imprisonment for sinning angels, held there till judgment.

This word appears to be used for fire.

HADES

The Greek G86 used here. Also translated hell.

Hades is the place where Jesus went to preach to the spirits after He was resurrected.

Act 2:27  Because^G3754 thou wilt not^G3756 leave^G1459 my^G3450 soul^G5590 in^G1519 hell,^G86 neither^G3761 wilt thou suffer^G1325 thine^G4675 Holy One^G3741 to see^G1492 corruption.^G1312

Act 2:31  He seeing this before^G4275 spake^G2980 of^G4012 the^G3588 resurrection^G386 of Christ,^G5547 that^G3754 his^G846 soul^G5590 was not^G3756 left^G2641 in^G1519 hell,^G86 neither^G3761 his^G846 flesh^G4561 did see^G1492 corruption.^G1312

When Jesus was resurrected, He then went to Hades to preach to the spirits who were there. He was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. Hades is the heart of the earth.

Many people think He was three days and three nights in the grave, but the scriptures do not say that at all, they say He was in the heart of the earth.

Mat 12:40  For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Now what did Jesus do in the heart of the earth? He was preaching to the spirits in the place called Hades, where He remained for three days and three nights.

1Pe 3:18  For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,

1Pe 3:19  by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,

1Pe 3:20  who formerly were disobedient, when once the Divine longsuffering waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water.

SHEOL     H7585

Not mentioned in the New Testament and not in some translations. However it means grave, hell or pit. In our translation used here, the word Sheol is not used.

Num 16:33  They,^H1992 and all^H3605 that^H834 appertained to them, went down^H3381 alive^H2416 into the pit,^H7585 and the earth^H776 closed^H3680 upon^H5921 them: and they perished^H6 from among^{H4480 H8432} the congregation.^H6951

Psa 139:8  If^H518 I ascend up^H5266 into heaven,^H8064 thou^H859 art there:^H8033 if I make my bed^H3331 in hell,^H7585 behold,^H2009 thou art there.
